Vintage framed print of Durga - a major Hindu goddess, worshipped as a principal aspect of the mother goddess Mahadevi. She is associated with protection, strength, motherhood, destruction, and wars. Imported from India, it dates from the mid 20th century. To prolong the life of the fragile print, it has been professionally block mounted. The print is now stable and doesn’t need glazing, so there is no glass in this picture.

Worship of the murti, the sacred image, is central to Hinduism. Many of the nineteenth century reform movements rejected the practice as outdated and superstitious. Nonetheless, sacred-image worship remains central today in helping Hindus establish, express and enhance their relationship with these divinities. This beautiful framed print was once perceived as not just an image of a Goddess, it was a Goddess - a Goddess incarnate in her printed image.
