£126.00

(approx 580x420mm)

Vintage framed print of the Gāyatrī Mantra (also known as the Sāvitri Mantra), a sacred mantra from the Rig Veda - it is known as "Mother of the Vedas". Imported from India, the framed picture dates from the mid 20th century, and is in completely original condition. It has been embellished with sequins and two further deities at the top.

Worship of the murti, the sacred image, is central to Hinduism. Many of the nineteenth century reform movements rejected the practice as outdated and superstitious. Nonetheless, sacred-image worship remains central today in helping Hindus establish, express and enhance their relationship with these divinities. This beautiful framed print was once perceived as not just an image of a Goddess, it was a Goddess - a Goddess incarnate in her printed image.
